Help With Chandelier Cleaning

Chandeliers are lovely, decorative, and can illuminate a room with style. If there is a downside to chandeliers it's that they tend to become dirty very quickly. As they emit light they naturally attract dust, pests, and other types of debris. Left neglected for even short periods of time, chandeliers can appear dull and lose the their luster completely. Cleaning chandeliers isn't easy either which is perhaps why so many people simply leave them in a state of neglect. Of course a professional glass or window cleaner can be called in when you have chandeliers in need of some TLC but for those who choose to tackle the job on their own the following tips should provide helpful.

Dust Often - Dusting chandeliers on a weekly basis will remove fresh debris and can prevent it from staining and causing additional problems. In order to dust a chandelier you'll need a soft dry cloth or two and/or a store bought soft duster. Dusting frequently also makes chandeliers easier to clean.

A Shocking Experience - Prior to cleaning any chandelier it should be disconnected from it's power source. Whether that means unplugging them or turning off the power in a home while you work, you can rest easily and work comfortably knowing that the your risk of electrocution or shock has dropped to zero. Always keep safety in mind.

Falling Debris - Before you climb up your ladder and begin cleaning your chandelier it's important to place something on the floor directly beneath said chandelier. Doing so will protect it from falling debris and allows you to monitor your cleaning progress as debris will continue falling until your fixture is clean.

Pieces Of The Puzzle - If you intend to clean the type of chandelier that needs to be disassembled in order to be cleaned you'll want to utilize some type of tags to mark individual pieces so that you know where they belong once it's time to reassemble your chandelier. Simple stickers and Post-It type papers work well here as does writing paper and some scotch tape. Use whatever is convenient for you but be sure to use something.

Easy On The Bulbs - While the metal frame of your chandelier is sturdy enough for things like brushes and other harsher tools, its bulbs are fragile. The glass used in chandelier bulbs is almost always paper thin and won't survive squeezing, hard scrubbing, or even excessive movement. Professional window cleaners recommend that you utilize a very soft moist cloth when chandelier bulbs need to be cleaned. After they have been cleaned cover them with small plastic bags in order to keep them from immediately dirtying again while you finish cleaning.

Once Section At A Time - It behooves you to clean your chandelier in sections so as to keep cleaned portions from becoming dirty while others are being tended to. If your chandelier is one that can be dismantled...do it. This will result in a cleaner lighting fixture and make your work much more effective.

Who Ya Gonna Call? - There are those chandeliers that are extremely fragile, hung in dangerously high locations, and others that require specialized care when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. In cases like these it can be very dangerous and costly to clean, or attempt to clean, such chandeliers. It therefore stands to reason that a professional glass cleaner should be hired. Professionals are inexpensive, work quickly, and work safely...so call one. The majority offer free quotes without any obligation so what are you waiting for?
