Pressure Washing Tips For Beginners – Part 1

orange county pressure washing services by a 5 star review company! Stanley Window Care has more than 15 years experience in pressure washing for commercial and residential.
Pressure washing a home or commercial building is something that's best left to professionals as they utilize state of the art equipment and cleaning solutions and produce results that do-it-yourselfer's simply can not. This isn't to say that laypersons shouldn't pressure wash their own homes or places of business; quite the opposite in fact. Amateur pressure washers can do their buildings a lot of good with retail pressure washing rentals and some elbow grease though they should go into the task knowing that their equipment and efforts will not produce the same level results that the pro's do.

If you are the type of home or business owners whom doesn't want to hire a professional pressure washer or you simply can not afford one (it usually costs more to do it yourself), you'll want to keep the following tips in mind. They can help you work more efficiently, save you money, avoid injury, and will leave you more satisfied with the results of your hard work.

Green Hands

If you're new to pressure washing you are likely unaware that pressure washing units, even the smaller ones, can cause extensive damage to both property and the human body. Common injuries include burns, cuts from pressurized water, and chemical damage caused by cleaning solutions. To avoid injury to your person or home spend some time doing a bit of homework. The internet contains countless articles on how to safely operate pressure washers. Do-it-yourselfer's can even find a plethora of videos on sites such as YouTube. Reading and/or watching "how to" information can keep you and your home safe.

Gas Or Electric?

There are many different types of retail grade pressure washers available for both rent and purchase. The two main types are gas and electric and can both have their pros and cons. Pressure washers powered by gasoline produce higher levels of pressure, utilize water a bit more efficiently, and allow users to clean surfaces much quicker. Sounds great right? Well before you get to excited you will want to keep in mind that gas powered washers require a great deal of maintenance. This isn't so much a problem when you are renting a unit, though it can be, but before you purchase one be prepared to change the motor's oil frequently, add fuel additives during refueling, and purchase protective coverings for its time in storage.

Electric pressure washers are an eco-friendly choice for the environmentally conscience as they produce no harmful emissions. Being that the engine runs on electricity there are also no gas and oil costs. Maintenance is virtually non existent as electric motors are usually housed in very protective casing. On the downside, electric pressure washers just aren't as powerful nor nearly as efficient as their gas powered brethren. This means that you will spend longer on cleaning and may be less satisfied with the results.

Is Bigger Better?

Once you have settled on either a gas or electric powered pressure washer you will need to select the right size unit for the job. People automatically tend to lean toward larger appliances because bigger often implies greater strength and ability though this isn't always the case. In the case of pressure washers the size of the engine does indeed determine it's total power but that doesn't necessarily mean you need something sizable. Pressure washers are manufactured to address 4 main types of work. Those being light, medium, heavy, and extra heavy duty.

  • Light duty units produce less than 2000 psi and are perfect for small decks, patios, and smaller pieces of outdoor furniture.

  • Medium duty pressure washers are a great choice for persons whom want to clean their buildings siding, driveways, fencing, or brick walls. These mid sized washers are capable of producing pressure levels between 2000 and 2800 PSI.

  • Heavy duty pressure washing machines are built to address the needs of large concrete areas and for those who need to clean the walls of a multi-storied dwelling. The output of heavy duty units usually falls in the 2900 to 3300 PSI range.

Extra heavy duty pressure washers are also known as professional grade pressure washers. While these tend to be very expensive and unavailable for rent their cost is well justified. The minimum PSI produced in these types of units is 3300 which means they can and will clean any and all surfaces. Parking garages, gutters, stucco walls, walkways, and brick are all left looking wonderful with the least amount of physical effort. Graffiti and mold are also easily removed from a home or business' exterior surfaces with this type of machine.

If you're a home or business owner who is considering doing a little pressure washing be sure to spend some time, prior to the work, learning how to use pressure washing hardware. Take your time in choosing the right unit for your home or office and when in doubt never hesitate to contact a professional. Many will happily help you make good decisions.

Pressure Washing and Landscaping Creates Many Benefits

Keeping a business attractive is an important part of keeping clients happy. When you have a business, no matter what the scale is, you’ll want to ensure that the exteriors always look great. To ensure that you have these things in order, pressure washing and landscaping become very important. If you haven’t thought about this recently, then perhaps it’s time to look into the bigger picture that comes with this. You’ll find that there are several elements that come with pressure washing, landscaping, and keeping your business facade looking great.

The Curb Appeal

A term that is often used in real estate is the notion of curb appeal. This is something that is noted when someone steps out of their vehicle and sees the property from the curb, in order to denote whether they want to buy it or not. The same can be said about business. If the facade of your business looks great then people will want to come and patronize it. If it looks terrible, dirty, and full of debris, and gardening problems they will most likely walk away. That’s not a good thing mind you. With pressure washing, you can rest assured that people will come through your business and see that it’s great from the curb to the interiors and more.

Give Your Workers A Sense of Pride

When you clean up the exterior of your business you’ll be offering an incentive to the workers inside. They will take pride in the fact that you’re working to ensure that the exterior of the business looks great. Landscaping and pressure washing can help spruce things up. With concrete and wall exteriors getting cleaned and cleared of dirt, debris, mold, mildew, and grime, you’ll find that things can look brand new. Of course, landscaping can seal the deal with an exterior design that is alluring, and welcoming to everyone that comes by, and of course, employees that work inside.

Peace of Mind

Perhaps the best thing about having your property cleaned with pressure washing and updating with landscaping is the fact that it will look great. That delivers on peace of mind. Peace of mind is hard to really put a finger on until you realize that you have it. Knowing your business looks good, from the exterior, and upgraded elements with landscaping, can ensure that your property is doing great, and looking good, even if you’re there to inspect every element yourself.

Keeping Your Home Maintained With Pressure Washing

orange coutny pressure washing
When you finally jump into a new home you’re going to be delighted beyond belief. There’s something amazing about this though over time you’ll find that your house will need a bit of upkeep and repair. While you can do a great deal of repairs inside without much incident, cleaning the exterior may be a bit more difficult than just swinging a hammer. Sure, you could try to use a hose but that’s not going to work out too well. What you will need is a bit more complex and that’s where the notion of pressure washing can come into play. Pressure washing is a premier solution that helps in a variety of different ways.

High Pressured Water

The main ingredient to pressure washing is water. This is sent to the exterior of your home with high pressure, more than you can get from a traditional garden hose by the way. The high-pressured water can take away dirt, mold, and much more from your roof, your windows and even the to siding that you have in place on your home. It’s a fast paced easy to use solution and it works with nearly all types of home exteriors.

Commercial Solutions

For those that are looking for commercial options you’ll find that some solutions are more advanced. Commercial options thrive because they use warm water and detergents that can clean up even the most dirt covered of areas. High pressured commercial washing solutions can clean sidewalks, parking lots, and a great deal of other professional elements. This is for houses and exteriors that are caked in mud, dirt, and haven’t been cleaned in a long time.

Using Pressure Washing Today

There are several ways that you can use pressure washing to clean your home. You can rent a machine and use a simplified solution that is made for consumers without spending much. While this is a good option you may need a bit more power and expertise. If you find that the residential rental options aren’t that good then it behooves you to call a professional for help.  A professional can get your house looking new with a mix of water, detergents, and will have more powerful equipment to utilize.

At the end of the day, you’ll find that pressure washing is a stellar option to keep your home looking brand new. Whether you have a great deal of grime and dirt on your exterior or you simply want to clear things up for the season this is a great solution to consider overall.

The Marriage Of Professional Pressure Washing And Professional Window Cleaning

Professional pressure washers provide both home and business owners with invaluable services. What a hammer and saw are to a carpenter, pressure washing services are to owners of homes and commercial structures. Professional pressure washing is a such a diverse service that it not only cleans walkways and parking lots but areas such as decks, fences, kitchen hoods, swimming pool areas, and of course the exterior walls of buildings. The industrial grade tools and solutions used by experts not only clean these surfaces but they can restore them and protect them as well. A pro pressure washing job can remove graffiti, stains, embedded debris, oil, and a large variety of additional substances. In years past pressure washers were difficult to find because the business was considered a niche one. This no longer the case however as many professional window cleaning firms have added these services to their list of services which not only makes them easy to find but has driven down costs considerably as well.

As mentioned previously, pressure washing services have become a staple within the modern window cleaning industry. Homes and even businesses can be cleaned for a fraction of the cost compared to what the services would have cost before the pressure washer industry merged with the professional window cleaning industry. Another advantage of getting pressure washing services from a window cleaning firm is the high level of customer service that often comes with those firms. Operating independently, pressure washer aren't always known for their attention to the personal aspects of service but through a professional window cleaner you'll always get friendly, personal, trustworthy, and affable service.

Many home and business owners already have professional window cleaners they trust and have been working with for years. Sadly, most of these same people are unaware that the firms they already have on hand offer pressure washing services. If you're one such person be sure to ask your window cleaner about their pressure washing services. You're buildings, abodes, and their many surfaces will thank you for it. You'll also be surprised at just how inexpensive the work is too.

Important Questions To Ask Before Pressure Washing Your Deck

orange county pressure washing experts
Pressure washing your deck isn’t a bad thing. However, you’re going to need to think about a few things beforehand. If hiring a professional do not just hire anyone to do this. Ask a few questions that will give you a little bit of insight as to what to expect. This is a good solution worth exploring on a deeper level especially if you want your deck to look great. Before you hire anyone here are a few questions that you should ask.

How Much Experience Does The Company Have?

When you’re investigating solutions ask the companies you want to hire how much experience they have with pressure washing. Ask how long they’ve been in business and what the experience their employees have. This will give you an idea of how well the business is doing and whether they are a good fit for your needs.

Does The Company Specialize In Deck Cleaning?

The next thing that should be considered is whether or not the company specializes in deck cleaning. Pressure washing decks is not something that every company does well,or is used to. Just because they have been in business for some time it doesn’t mean that they are going to be able to give you specific help in cleaning decks overall.

Is The Washing Done With Just Water or Are Detergents Used?

Moving forward you’ll want to ask about water and detergents. Does the company use detergents or just water? Some companies will use both while others will use just one or two. Either way you should ask what the options are in regard to cleaning decks. If they don’t work with pressure washing with detergents then you’ll have something that may not work well for you. There’s a balancing act here.

Do You Apply Sealers?

If your deck is made of wood, which is common, you need to ask about whether the manufacturers use sealants. If they do you’ll need to make sure that you know what it is. Ask what type of sealers are used and make sure that the sealer meets the deck’s build and requirements so that you’re able to ensure that your deck stays good over time.

Licensing and More

The last thing that you should consider is simple, whether or not the company is licensed and bonded. Ask about insurance, licensing, and other questions about pressure washing. This will help you understand the bigger picture and whether the company is in fact the right one for you. Don’t hire anyone that isn’t licensed.

Selecting The Best Professional Pressure Washer

Southern California homeowners are extremely busy going to work, taking care of children, running errands, and living life. This means that there is little to no time for cleaning nor maintaining the exteriors of their homes. Things like walls, driveways, car parks, walkways, decks, and even pool areas can and do become very dirty. Heavy foot and tire traffic, not to mention spills and pet messes, leave behind things like stains and other debris that can be nearly impossible to remove. These areas become even more difficult to clean when they're left neglected for months or even years at a time. Those homeowners that do attempt to tackle this arduous task often find themselves frustrated and angry simply because they don't really make much progress.

One way homeowners can not only ensure these areas get and stay clean is to hire a professional pressure washer. Not only does hiring an experienced pro save homeowners a ton of money but a ton of time as well. More importantly, a professional pressure washer can handle the seemingly impossible task with relative ease and quite quickly to boot. This is because professionals aren't using the simple pressure washers and commercial grade tools to do their work. Instead they are using industrial tools, cleaners, and chemicals to get the job done. All this may indeed sound exciting, especially to those homeowners who are having problems with the aforementioned areas but it behooves homeowners to be critical and very careful when it comes to which pressure washing firm they hire. This is important because not everyone who claims to be a professional actually is. Some amateur, startup, or casual individuals may do excellent work but they do their work uninsured and un-bonded which can be disastrous for homeowners should a problem ever arise. So how exactly can one determine which firms are and aren't hiring? Follow these tips to make the hiring process much easier.

Reputation

It used to be much more difficult to look into the reputation of a company or firm before the advent of the personal computer and the internet. These days however the internet and mobile technology make this task quite easy. Homeowners need to look at and read reviews across multiple websites and are encouraged to speak with others who've hired the company they're interested in. An hour or so of research here goes a long way and can help homeowners protect both their homes and themselves.

Price Estimates

A company's prices can reveal quite a lot. Any professional or firm that puts out high quotes might be doing so to make themselves look more important or professional than they really are. Conversely, those that go well below standard market prices might be desperate for business or an unlicensed person scrambling for work. In the event a homeowner finds a relatively inexpensive service that they're interested in, always fall back on reviews and a little online investigating. Homeowners can also ask for license numbers etc.

Tools Of The Trade

Homeowners will of course focus first on quality of service and a professional's reputation but they would be foolhardy to overlook the tools that a company does or doesn't not use. State of the art pressure washing equipment is what homeowners should aim for though equipment a few years old shouldn't ever dissuade anyone from hiring a company as professionals only upgrade their equipment but every few years. Asking professionals not only what type of equipment they use is important but it's equally important to find out how old those tools may be and what condition they may be in as well.

Comprehensive Services

Homeowners should be wary of professional pressure washers who only clean one or two specific types of surfaces and those that offer a single very basic cleaning service. People work hard for the money they have and want to ensure that when they do spend...it's money well spent. The best professionals are going to offer a multitude of services that address all types of surfaces and needs.

Pressure Washing Home and Accessories

For years, we used pressure washing for the exterior surface of our homes. But power washing is not just for the sidings, concrete, decks or patios anymore. You can benefit from pressure washing to clean your outdoor furniture, as well as your driveway and sidewalk whether they are tile or concrete. You can save a lot of money in the long run by power washing your house and outdoor furniture. When it comes to maintenance, pressure washing is the most ideal, effective and headache free cleaning within your budget.

It is always a good idea to consult with a professional contractor and get an accurate price estimate for power washing your house. If it's done properly, pressure washing can make your home and business look sparkly. It is an effective way of cleaning to improve your property's value, as well as it's aesthetic  appeal. You can prevent unnecessary repairs by periodically power washing the exterior of your property. No matter where you live and what the whether conditions are, dirt, mildew, gum and debris are inevitable problems you will have to face over time. Pressure washing will prevent these things from happening by keeping your home and business fresh, clean and like new. Do not just think about your sidings', walls' and patio' maintenance but think about the cleanliness of your driveway, walkway, tiles and outdoor furniture.

Cleaning Your Sidewalk, Driveway and Walkway

Pressure washing will always keep your driveway and walkway in good condition. These are the areas that are continually exposed to dirt and other damaging elements like mildew. You can prevent the damage caused by these elements by power washing your sidewalk, driveway and walkways. One thing you need to keep in mind is that the concrete surfaces require a different kind of cleaning material, a chemical specifically made for cleaning these surfaces.

Pressure Washing Your Roof

Roofs are damp and shady areas that attract algae and bacteria. By periodically pressure washing your roof, you can prevent the damage caused by these unwanted algae and bacteria hidden in your roof.

Pressure Washing Your Deck or Patio

Wooden surfaces like patios and decks can benefit from power washing as much as the concrete surfaces. All wood will look weathered over time. If you do not clean these areas at least once a year, you will notice mold and mildew buildup. This can greatly reduce the quality and safety of your deck and patio. The longer you ignore the cleaning, the worse the damage will become, finally costing you more money to replace and reconstruct them. By using the right cleaning agents, you can maintain your deck and patio in good shape for many years.

Pressure Washing Your Outdoor Furniture

Whether you leave your yard furniture outdoors year round or not, they still need thorough cleaning. Rain, dust, sun, dirt... your yard furniture has its share of these elements as much as your house. Power washing is a great way to keep your yard furniture clean and in good shape. Every time you pressure wash your tables, chairs and accessories, they will look fresh and new. There are different levels of pressure you can apply to the outdoor furniture depending on their material. Power washing your furniture usually requires a small amount of pressure compared to other exterior surfaces.

Stanley Window Care specializes in Orange County pressure washing, Orange County power washing and Huntington Beach pressure washing.

When Your Home Needs a Bath Pressure Washing is the Answer

You’ve probably never considered washing your home, and you’ve probably thought that a good rain would do the job for you. If you live in California, good luck, because you’re going to need it. Sure there are times when it rains hard in California, and it will wash off a good portion of the stuff that gathers.

However, look closer and you’ll probably find mold and mildew gathering in the corners even after a good rain. More often than not, that rain will not be hard enough to loosen the dirt and grime that has had a chance to take root on the outside of your home. You know what dirt and water makes don’t you? Sure you do and you’ll have mud along with leaves, bird droppings, and anything that pops onto your roof falling off right at your feet. All right, so take your ordinary garden hose and spray it against the house, on your windows and screens. You’ll see lots of dirt drift down to the ground along with an accumulation of everything else including spider webs.

There are better answers to your garden hose, and a professional company that deals in pressure washing is a good choice. When they come regularly to your home environment, they do the job that you’ve put off for years. You can rent a pressure washer, but you still may have problems with the amount of pressure needed to eradicate all that stuff. Too much pressure will cause windows to break; not enough pressure won’t get the job done. The professional pressure washer will know the amount of pressure to clean your entire home, your roof, your gutters, your windows, doors and screens.

Then they will turn that pressure on your patio, deck, furniture, walkways. Pressure Wash All Around Your Home

That’s right, Pressure Wash not just your home, but all around your home. To keep the dirt, grime, mildew and other stuff off your walkways, patio furniture, patios and decks follow a few simple tricks to accomplish that task. The best and easiest way is to consult a professional who will advise you in the proper procedures to keep your property in new condition by using a pressure washer.

Whether you hire that professional, rent a power washer or purchase your own, you should still have a bit of knowledge to help in getting the job done. You’ll find out quickly that when you use the pressure washer regularly it becomes easier every time, and you can’t beat the end results.

When your walkways have been exposed to the elements for months on end, the easiest and fastest way to clean them and to keep them looking good is to power wash them. Otherwise the dirt and grime clings to the edges and eventually cause damage to the cement.

When you power wash the walkways use a washing cleaning detergent specifically for power washers on cement surfaces.

The reason you need to pressure wash your patio and deck is to keep the mildew and mold from taking up residence. Unless it is cleaned properly it may cause permanent damage including fading and/or cracking. Regular pressure washing will assure you that it will remain in good condition.

When you power wash your patio or deck, be sure to use either a 2400 or 2600 PSI pressure-washing nozzle. If you use less, it won’t get the job done, and more could cause damage to the patio surface.

If you live in a climate where your patio furniture remains outside all year, your chairs and patio tables still sit in the rain, wind, dust and dirt the entire time. They not only fade, but accumulate a coat of grime that will transfer to your clothing when you sit down. Power washing will keep them clean and looking good too.

When you power wash your patio furniture use the low-pressure level so you won’t knock the furniture over. Especially be careful when washing the glass tops of your tables.

If it all seems like a lot of work, and you have neither time nor inclination to pressure wash all around your home, hire a professional. They will get the job done quickly especially when you have unexpected company on their way.

Pressure Washing Suggestions

Whether you’re doing the job yourself, or you plan on hiring a professional to do the work for you, you should still have some basic knowledge of pressure washing. You shouldn’t just buy or rent a pressure washer and start spraying. You need to take precautions as you prepare to spray.
If your house has vinyl siding, brick or stone, you should caulk those areas that have cracks in the siding. Otherwise the water seeps into the wall and may cause mold, then you’ll have bigger problems. Whatever product you use to fill in the areas, let the patching dry for at least one week before you start pressure washing.

Next take steps to protect the landscaping by covering your plants and flowers with a tarp. Be sure your windows are closed, but that’s an obvious suggestion, and don’t ever spray the water directly onto the windows.

Use the proper detergent approved for pressure washing. When you start on your house, start at the bottom and work your way to the top with the detergent. Do one area at a time because you don’t want the detergent to dry. As you spray off the detergent, start at the top and work your way down.

Before you start on the garage floor, the cement or brick driveway, patch all the cracks with the proper filling, and again let it try and settle for an entire week. Follow the same steps as we mentioned above.
If you’re doing the job yourself and have to rent the machine, find out the proper machine for the job at hand. You won’t need the most powerful machine to do simple jobs around your home. Smaller and easier to handle machines will be the best for your job.

When you hire the professionals, try to find one who knows what he is doing. Pressure washers can do a lot of damage if not used properly. References are the best bet when making your choice so ask them for references before they start.

When you see the job that pressure washers accomplish, you’ll want to use them regularly before the dirt, dust, and oil spilled on the surfaces around your home cause permanent damage. Be sure to use the proper equipment to protect yourself and others. Things like eye protectors, plastic tarps, gloves and the correct cleaning products that are made for the pressure washers. Remember pressure washers are not toys and shouldn’t be used by children.

Scratches on Glass Can Be Removed

Up until about five years ago, the only way to remove the scratches on glass would be to replace the entire piece of glass. Needless to say that is expensive no matter the size of the glass. Now there are glass scratch removal and restoration systems, and no they aren’t cheap. The cost, depending on the company, ranges from $1,600 to over $4,000 and aren’t necessarily for a single homeowner.

However, if you are in the glass business, over a period of time, that cost would pay for itself. There are businesses that deal in the restoration of glass and when you buy their system, the instructions and follow-up sessions are free. Yes we said free, and if your company has a large amount of breakage the glass restoration systems will be worth their weight.

Glass companies know that the greatest amount of breakage happens before, during and shortly after installation and with the restoration system, you can easily remove the scratches within five to thirty minutes. Larger and deeper scratches may take longer. Anytime you work around construction, breakage or simply scratches will occur. When a business takes the necessary steps to learn a new process, they will get in on the ground floor of a growing venture.

A few of the things you should know and look for when seeking any new business procedure: You’ll want to know how efficient their system is in removing scratches. Some suggest that you should use six inches as your template. Next, ask how the system works to remove deep scratches, and are there any limitations? Can the system repair the edges of glass, and how about replacement costs?

You’ll also want to know other material costs, and are there warranties provided by the company? Finally what type of training opportunities, and are they ongoing?

When your replacement glass costs reach into the thousands, you will be anxious to invest in a product that will improve your bottom line. Also it will improve your time on the job, so time and money savings will be hard to turn down.

The scratch restoration systems allow you to repair a wide variety of damage and when you consider that you’ll have an alternative solution you’ll be anxious to learn more about the product. When it’s necessary to replace damaged glass you not only pay for the glass itself, but for the labor charges, and that can be extensive. Another possibility would be to open another door for your business, and that is the glass repair business.

Removing Water Spots From Windows

Unless you possess the knowledge to do so, keeping your windows clean in between visits from a professional can be challenging. Even after windows are professionally cleaned and treated with chemicals that strengthen them and make them resistant to weather, windows still accumulate water spots rather easily when they are cleaned by a layperson. While many people typically utilize Windex or some other brand of glass cleaner to remove water spots these chemicals don't always do so effectively and can leave streaks on windows; making them even more difficult and frustrating to clean. Individuals can keep their windows free of water spots by following the tips below.

The longer water spots sit on windows the more difficult they become to remove. This is why it's important to remove them from windows as soon they are noticed. Removing them sooner rather than later makes it more likely that they'll come off easier with far less effort and chemicals than they would if left alone for any amount of time. It's important to check windows regularly to ensure that there are no water spots which need tending to.

The simplest and most effective home remedy for water spots is white vinegar. Individuals can apply a small amount of white vinegar to a soft cloth, wipe a window that has water spots, and watch those spots disappear relatively quickly. This method is a favorite among homeowners not only because it's simple and effective but because most homeowners have vinegar somewhere in their home.

Another option for removing water spots is to utilize a small amount of rubbing alcohol first and then Windex shortly after. As Windex doesn't always do the job itself however, using a little rubbing alcohol first will often do the trick. The alcohol breaks up the stains and loosen them while the Windex removes them as it cleans the glass. Rubbing alcohol and the Windex can also be applied to a paper towel which then can be gently rubbed across a window with water spots.

Many professional window cleaners advise homeowners to try using microfiber cloths when other methods aren't working. These can be found at local grocery stores as well as home supply stores and work quite nicely on windows with water spots. What makes these cloths a great cleaning option is the fact that they usually don't require any soap or chemicals as the cloth alone does the trick.

While all of the aforementioned options will remove water spots from windows, homeowners should first consult with a professional window cleaner in order to determine whether or not their windows are capable of handling these or any combination of said chemicals. Not all windows are made the same and some chemicals can damage not only glass but the preservatives put there during a previous professional window cleaning.

Tips for Green Cleaning

No matter where you search for the best cleaning products for your home, you’ll always hear about Green Cleaning. You’ll find those cleaners in the soap and cleaning product aisle, but many call themselves ‘Green’ because the label is green. Doesn’t always mean that the product is green, so beware.

There are many cleaning products you probably already have around your home. Things like baking soda, salt, white vinegar, Borax, olive oil, and even lemon juice. These products are less toxic and also cost much less than the advertised labels in the grocery store.

However there is nothing wrong about using the products that are already mixed and don’t require as much scrubbing as your homemade products.

A few tips that could prove useful in your quest to clean with green cleaners: to prevent clogged drains, use a strainer to catch hair, food and other stuff from clogging your drains. If you cook with a lot of oil and some of it goes down the drain, pour boiling hot water down the drain at least once a week.

That hot water works better and faster than most powerful chemicals. If the drain is still clogged, use a ½ cup of baking soda followed by ½ cup of white vinegar. It’s best if you then cover the drain and let the process foam. You could also add ½ cup of salt followed by six cups of boiling water. If all else fails, you may have to get a plumber’s snake to force out the clog.

For cleaning wood floors there are a lot of combinations you could use of olive oil and vinegar. The type of wood and the finish would designate the ratio, but try ¼ cup of vinegar and one gallon of hot water. Use this first on a small area that is hidden under a rug or behind the couch.

Clean dirty windows with ¼ cup of vinegar and 2 to 3 cups of water. Others suggest a little liquid detergent, still others prefer lemon juice. Newspapers are popular when cleaning windows, while others prefer a clean cotton rag or towel.

To clean ovens, many simply buy a commercial oven cleaner, and they are caustic, so be careful.

To freshen the air in your home, even in the dead of winter, open that window to let the clean air flow.

Many homes are air tight, and the air gets stale. Nothing is better than clean fresh air from an open window.
