Cleaning Gutters The Easy Way – Basic Tips

Very few people want to clean their gutters. It’s not something that is fun nor easy to do. It’s easy to ignore them and that’s the real problem. If you ignore your gutters and don’t clean them properly from time to time you will end up dealing with a variety of issues. Not cleaning gutters will come back to haunt you when it starts to rain and that’s something that most people don’t want to deal with. If your gutters fail, you could be dealing with a massive flood and lots of damage to your home. To ensure that you are not dealing with those issues you will want to look into cleaning gutters the easy way and there are a few tips that you can explore in that regard.

The Easy Part (The Gear)

Before you get started cleaning gutters you will need to have a few things at your side. The first thing that you should have is a ladder. Aside from that you will want to have towels, gloves, and safety gear to ensure that you are not hurt in case of a fall. A garden hose is a good option too though you don’t necessarily need that in every instance. Having your gear ready and in good working order prior to undertaking this task will help ensure your work is both efficient and of high quality.

Starting Points

Take your ladder and place it where you can reach gutters while viewing them from the top to bottom. You will want to be above your gutters and be able to clean things out properly. Dig deep and pull out leaves, dirt, and grime and dispose of them in some sort of trash or cloth receptacle. Keep going through your gutters left to right until you’re complete. If you can’t get some of the debris out leave it for the time being and keep your focus on what is easily removed.

The Drain Pipes

The next thing that you should do is clear the drain pipes. Doing so will allow you to rinse your gutters with water or a cleaning solution and allow all of it to drain properly. Stubborn blockages should be addressed with a plumber’s snake or a thick hanger if need be. Clear drain pipes help reduce build up in the main tracks of your gutters.

The Final Blast

Once you have adequately pulled, cleared, and cleaned gutters and drain pipes, you will want to use a hose to spread water throughout the interior of the gutters and downspouts. You want to use the high pressure setting of your garden hose and get water blasted through the area and that’s it. Don’t wait for the rainy season to do this mind you. Get this done before the rainy season comes and you’ll be prepared for Mother Nature when she brings the precipitation.

The Dangers Of Clogged Rain Gutters

gutter cleaning experts
Most homes have rain gutters installed in order to not only help direct water to street gutters and proper drains but to protect homes as well. Most homeowners however don't give much thought to their rain gutters. With work, family, leisure, etc. on the brain it's easy to see why homeowners don't often, if ever, give much thought to their rain gutters. This is unfortunate because faulty, clogged, or damaged rain gutters can lead to whole host of problems.

Foundational Issues

Perhaps one of the most dangerous and costly issues that can arise from neglected or clogged rain gutters is damage to a homes foundation. When rain gutters become full of debris and/or sustain damage that causes them to stop up, the overflow of water will fall to the ground and begin pooling at a homes foundation. At first water begins to saturate a homes foundation which causes small yet unnoticeable problems. As the foundation becomes oversaturated however walls and floors inside of a home can begin to crack or even collapse. Repairing walls and floors is extremely expensive as is repairing a homes foundation.

Keep Them Clean

Homeowners are often surprised by how affordable a professional rain gutter cleaning actually is. With the price being within reach of those with even modest budgets homeowners need to give serious consideration to having their rain gutters cleaned at least once a year. Annual cleanings from a professional can keep debris from obstructing water flow, keep critters from nesting within, and can save a home from extensive damage. Many professional window cleaners provide rain gutter cleaning services and your search for a professional should start with those individuals/firms.

Cleaning Your Gutters

It’s a job no one enjoys doing, however if you ignore the job for an indefinite period of time, it may cause your roof to leak and when that happens, you’ll really have problems. If you don’t like ladders, and can’t get your gutters cleaned in any other way, you may want to hire a professional.

The ways to clean your gutters are as numerous as there are people who clean them. Everyone has their own ideas, and you may want to develop yours. One thing you’ll want to do if you drag out that old ladder is to be careful that you don’t lean the ladder against the gutters, because that will dent or damage them.

Whatever way you decide to get the job done while cleaning your gutters is to have the proper tools at hand so you’re not climbing up and down the ladder. It’s also wise, but how many of us follow those rules, it doesn’t mean we’re stupid or lazy, but then again, maybe it does. Anyway, like we said, it’s wise to protect yourself against what you’ll find up there.

Wear gloves, a dust mask and safety goggles, and we don’t need to tell you to make sure the ladder is secure before you climb up the rungs.

If you haven’t cleaned the gutters for a long time, be prepared to place the dried up leaves, dirt, dead birds or other objects into a trash bag. Don’t just swish the stuff out and let them hit the side of your home or windows. You’ll be making more work for yourself.

Scoop the stuff out with a garden trowel, if you can find one, rinse the dust and dirt toward the downspout, and if necessary scrub it clean. After it’s clean, you may decide to install screens or caps to make the job easier next time. However they aren’t cheap and they actually make the job harder. Others suggest that leaf strainers at the tops of the drains will cut down on large clogs.

If you have several trees in the area you should probably clean your gutters regularly, otherwise a couple of times a year should be sufficient. Whether you do the job yourself, or hire a professional don’t wait until the gutters are full of stuff. That stuff can rot and cause further damage to your home.
So cleaning your gutters should be a regular task and easier each time.
